A 250-year-old heritage

1757

  • Maison Henri Abelé was founded by Théodore Vander Veken.

  • Antoine de Muller set up for good in Reims as successor to the Maison Vander Veken. Antoine introduced many young men to the wine profession and encouraged technical innovations to improve the quality and storage of sparkling wine.

  • François Joseph Charles Kilian Abelé became the partner of Antoine de Muller and then founded the Abelé de Muller house in 1842.

  • The last of the four children of the Abelé / De Mullers, Henri Marie Joseph Louis Abelé (1852-1923), carried on the Champagne trade alone on the death of his father in 1876. He had commercial premises built and cellars dug in Reims, in Rue de la Justice.

  • Henri Abelé was the first to use deep freezing techniques in making Champagne wines (patent of Armand Walfart for iced disgorging). Until then, this had been done by flying disgorging, but thanks to Walfart’s invention, still in use today, almost no wine was lost in the operation and it was made easier and quicker.

  • Henri Abelé merged the company of his ancestors on his mother’s side with that of his father under the single name Abelé - Vander Veker, in 1908.

  • The fire of 19 September 1914 in Reims hit the houses around the cathedral, including Henri Abelé’s home in Rue de l’Ecole de Médecine. The family was forced to seek refuge in the cellars of the business. Henri Abelé died in 1923.

  • To the initiative of Henri Abelé, the Society of Friends of Reims Cathedral was founded on 9 May to collect funds for the restoration work.

  • Maison Abelé joined the Freixenet Group and separated from the Compagnie Française des Grands Vins.

  • Franck Nicaise became the new cellar master and Henri Abelé invested in a new fleet of small stainless-steal vinification vats.

  • Henri Abelé celabrated the 800th anniversary of the Reims Cathedral. For this special date, Maison Abelé launched a Sourire de Reims Rosé limited edition.

  • Henri Abelé launched a limited edition. This cuvée is a tribute to the 2007 year which is symbolic for the Maison because it was celebrated its 250 years, the arrival of cellar master Franck Nicaise and also the investment in a new winery.
